"The Immortals" by Santie Cronje.
The Spirit of Huia outshines the life of New Zealand ornithologist Walter Buller who wrote the book, 'History of the birds of New Zealand' in 1882.
Buller's legacy was a two sided sword. He gave us a handbook on the study of New Zealand birds but he also participated in the capture of birds including huia by the hundreds, to use in his studies and sell to overseas collectors in the name of ornithology.
The three feathers symbolize the continuation of life through generations. The centre feather is both daughter and mother. To her left is her mother and to her right is her daughter. She is protected and comforted by their energies.
The pencil symbolizes the history of the Huia's life being retold and remembered through art and literature. May we remember them, always.
