Birds of a Feather, by Santie Cronje
Birds were significant symbols for Santie Cronje after her relocation to New Zealand in 1999. In the early stages, she felt a strong connection to the migrating birds such as Godwits, Oystercatchers, and Stilts. These birds often appeared in her paintings with suitcases or on boats, symbolising a journey to a new home. As she grew more comfortable, the birds she painted changed to include Fantails, Grey Warblers, and Kingfishers. Eventually, she incorporated the Huia bird as a symbol marking the close of her bird series, reflecting her journey of finding a home in New Zealand.
