Kingfishers are found throughout the country in both coastal and inland freshwater habitats. They live in a wide range of habitats, including forest, river margins, farmland, lakes, estuaries and rocky coastlines.
The kōtare, or Sacred Kingfisher, is a bird of significant spiritual importance in New Zealand, especially within Māori culture. It is seen as a symbol of freedom, courage, adventure, balance, and a free spirit. Additionally, the kōtare is believed to be a guardian, forewarns of danger, and represents awareness. In Māori mythology, it is associated with abundance and a connection to the spirit world.
