In Maori legend, the tīeke carries a mark left by Māui after wrestling the sun — a trace of a moment that could not be undone. 

I think of that mark as a meditation on consequence: how every action leaves a warmth behind it, how time refuses erasure. Regret is not only sorrow but evidence of having lived, of having touched the world and been altered in return. When I painted this bird, it felt like studying that quiet exchange — the way experience settles into us and becomes part of our form.

The tīeke stands composed within its mark, neither resisting nor hiding it. A small philosophy in feathers: that what we carry is what shapes our light.
